Scottie's has undoubtedly one of the best gluten free menu's in town, with one or two small suggestions from us.  ...but we will get to those a little later, first the really good stuff.

I can't decide whether to start with the GF Shewman Special or the Macho Nachos.  I have a massive internal struggle every time we go, trying to decide which of the two to order.  It took me while to try the Shewman Special; somehow peanut butter, bacon and jalapenos on a burger sounded, well strange.  Turns out, it's strangely out of this world delicious!  By far my favorite burger in town and served on an Udi's gluten free bun.

Now for the Macho Nachos, ok I suggest bringing either a very hungry tummy or a friend to the plate on this one.  It's a huge platter!  It's the perfect choice for those friends who never order their own food but always seem to want to steal yours.  It's big enough that you won't mind sharing....much.  When I'm being a good girl I crave the Grilled mo’fo’ Cluck Lite; so yummy.  So many amazing choices, so little time.

We love that Scottie's offers gluten free appetizers.  Those aren't terribly easy to find and it's frustrating when your non-gluten free dining partner wants to share an appetizer with you and you can't accommodate.  The Macho Nachos, Spinach & Artichoke dip or 7 Tidals Buffalo Chicken Dip should be good enough to get you started. 


Burgers and fries; it's a thing.

Now for the suggestions.  First, Scottie's we really "need" better gluten free sides.  Ok, maybe we don't "need" them but it sure would be appreciated.

It's hard to get too excited about broccoli, gluten-free corn tortilla chips & salsa, cajun black beans & dirty rice or fresh fruit salad.  Especially with your burger.  

Some potato chips or even better....is it too much to hope for a dedicated gluten free fryer for fries?  It might seem like s small thing to most but for those of us with gluten allergies...it feels like normal.  It's a sigh of relief when we can eat the fries because we don't have to watch our loved ones eat the little golden bits of heaven while secretly seething with jealous rage across the table.  Oh, was that a bit harsh, maybe too over the top?  It probably was but you get the idea.


Gluten Free Beer


Every Scottie's location we have been to has offered gluten free beer, it does seem to vary by location.  Scottie's on 96th carries one of my favorites; Redbridge by Anhueser-Busch.   We were disappointed to find that the Noblesville location was offering Omission Pale Ale.  

The gluten content in Omission is high enough that it still may not be safe for those with Celiac.  Most with Celiac won't touch it.  Certainly, if you are going to offer a gluten free beer, one that we can actually drink would seem to make more sense. 

Redbridge, New Grist or Greene's would all be a better choice.  However, we would love to see Scottie's carry Estrella Damm Daura.  Estrella is also made from wheat and the gluten is removed during processing, the gluten content in Daura is extremely low and is safe for those with Celiac.  It's also my favorite and tastes the most like it's gluteny counterparts. 

In an effort to insight a little friendly competition...do I dare?  Yes, I think I do.  Matt the Miller's is the only place in town that I'm aware of that carries Estrella Damm Daura.

Locations

A favorite among gluten free locals, CR Hero's stands out for several reasons.  Among them include the breaded chicken fingers, dedicated gluten free fryer, gluten free buns and appetizers.  Prepare to love the Love me Tenders, the CR Turkey sandwich is absolutely delicious, they make a mean Filet  Mignon Medallion.

There are a lot of scrumptious choices on the menu, CR Hero's has gone the extra mile to craft an interesting gluten free menu and the GF community in Indy has noticed.  There's nothing we appreciate more than being able to go out to eat and be able to order a normal meal, by normal I mean....not a hamburger patty and broccoli.  Thank you CR Hero's for giving us a safe place to eat AND a mouth watering menu!

If the menu isn't enough to get your attention, they also serve Redbridge, which happens to be my favorite gluten free beer made by Anheuser-Busch. Watch the game, have a beer and eat delicious gluten free food; I know where I will be on game day.

I don't think it would come as a huge surprise to anyone who has been living with a food intolerance or Celiac that inflammation could be responsible for depression.  It's not always easy to connect the dots back to food, who would immediately think that anxiety, mood swings and panic attacks could be connected to food.  Perhaps not the average person, but shouldn't Dr's be at least reasonably aware of this possibility?

Dr's seem to always be treating the symptoms and not the underlying cause.  If you are diagnosed with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, you might want to ask why.  If you are diagnosed with low iron, low vitamin D, low vitamin B - three things commonly low with Celiac, you should ask why. Body aches and pains, what is causing those?

Halloween is tricky if you can't eat gluten.  It becomes even more difficult to navigate because seasonal items are often made on shared lines.  Many of the candy manufacturers will caution you to stick to their "core" product lines and to avoid specialty or seasonal items.

Papa Roux = hidden gem.  The food is amazing and most of the items on the menu are gluten free sans bun.  They will put your delicious meat choice on a bed of rice and beans, who cares about a bun when the food is this amazing?!  Not me.

They make their own sodas; delicious.  I'm a root beer fan and so far I haven't been able to tear myself away from the root beer to try anything else.   With flavors like "Wedding Cake" and "Chocolate Soda", we will have to work on that.



 

 

 

 

 




Don't make it to 10th and Post often?  Well, we suggest it's worth making a trip out of it.  The portions are huge and the sides are all you can eat.  Most of the sides are gluten free with some obvious exceptions like the French bread, bread pudding and corn bread.  You can certainly make due with the delicious Creole chili, red beans, coleslaw and applesauce.

What's not to love about Papa Roux?  We can't think of a thing.

Ok, I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist but something about this recall bothers me.  Since "gluten free" Cheerios hit the market, enough people have complained about getting sick that the FDA was ready to start an investigation.

All of a sudden, whoops, we just realized that 4 months ago a bunch of wheat accidentally fell into one of our batches and we are just now realizing it; yeah that's it.  Could it be that General Mills initiated this recall to avoid being fined by the FDA for making false claims?

Maybe like so many others, General Mills didn't believe gluten was a serious problem.  Maybe they thought we wouldn't notice.  Well, GM, Celiac is real, yes we do get sick and hell yes we will notice.

I don't seem to be the only one who is raising an eyebrow over the way General Mills is portraying this incident.

The following is a letter the Gluten Free Watchdog composed to GM:

There is a big difference between restaurants who simply identify things that are already gluten free on their menu and those that go over and above to create a gluten free dining experience. Logan's Roadhouse is one that has simply identified gluten free items on their menu.

Yes, you can eat gluten free but it likely won't be the most exciting meal.  By the time you order your meal with the parts that aren't gluten free removed, you likely won't be left with much.  For example, let's look at the:  Santa Fe Tilapia that you need to order without tortilla strips, roasted corn and black bean salsa, or cilantro chipotle sauce.  Ok, so now your Santa Fe Tilapia is just plain Tilapia.

At first glance, the menu may look like it has a lot on it, but you soon realize that there are more gluten free dressings and seasonings than actual food items.  

We did have a Sirloin and a baked potato and I will say both were delicious but Logan's won't be a regular stop on our gluten free dining rotation.

Logan's Roadhouse Locations

Cheerios is recalling more than 1.8M boxes of Cheerios due to "wheat contamination".

General Mills says "Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios produced on these dates at the company’s Lodi, California facility are being recalled because an isolated incident resulted in wheat flour being inadvertently introduced into the gluten free oat flour system at its Lodi facility. As a result, the products may contain an undeclared allergen – wheat – in products labeled as gluten-free."

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cheerios Recall


Unless General Mills changes their manufacturing processes, we wouldn't consider Cheerios gluten free to begin with.   Please read the following information regarding their batch testing practices.

Bagger Dave's has always been a great gluten free option but they just changed their menu and we approve.  They now have more gluten free options than ever before.

There is a definite difference between restaurants who simply identify things that are already gluten free on their menu and those that go over and above to create a gluten free dining experience. 

We believe Bagger Dave's may have more gluten free appetizers than anyone in the city; 7 to be exact.  Their new Crispy Fried Artichoke Hearts fried in their signature gluten free breading looked delicious as did the Santa Fe Nachos just to name a couple.  All of their burgers and sandwiches can be made gluten free without a bun.  (We are wondering how long it will be until they offer gluten free buns?)

We love Bagger Dave's, the service has always been great, the homemade soda's are delicious, the atmosphere is nice and they have plenty of gluten free options. 

They now have all the gluten free options clearly marked on their regular menu.  Dedicated fryers means their fries are gluten free.

Bagger Dave's even serves Omission "Gluten Free" Lager.
